“S” is for…

A meme passed along by my lovely wife. Name 10 things I love, starting with the letter (in this case) “S.”

superman1. Superman – Well, duh. In one of the old photo albums at my parents’ house is a picture of me dressed as Superman at Halloween, aged probably 4 or 5. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love Superman. Even though I’d say that Captain Marvel is probably my favorite superhero, a perfect distillation of the power fantasy that is at the core of the whole superhero idea, I still think Superman is pretty awesome.

star_trek_csg_0142. Star Trek – Well, duh, again. Speaking of nerdy childhood clothing, my brother and I used to each have “Star Trek” uniform shirts. He had command gold, I had sciences blue – and we all know that Spock was way cooler than Kirk, so it’s all good. I remember playing “Star Trek” before I have any clear recollection of watching “Star Trek.”

24park-60013. “Salt Peanuts” – A bop standard, never better than on the 1953 Jazz at Massey Hall. Up there with Miles Davis’s “So What” and Charles Mingus’s “Better Git it in Your Soul” as one of my favorite jazz tunes ever. Mingus (bass), Bud Powell (piano) and Max Roach (drums) are all great, no doubt. But the highlight is listening to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie going absolutely apeshit.

spork-sul-l5. Sporks – The moment in WALL-E when he’s unable to decide whether to file his newly-discovered spork with the forks or the spoons is simply brilliant. I love the utilitarian nature of the spork. Perfect for backpacking trips or carrying along with your brown-bag lunch.

san-francisco-city-guide-ga-1-16. San Francisco – I’ve been to lots of great cities, cities I love, but San Francisco is still my favorite. Even though I was mugged there.

jsbiopic7. Scalzi, John- Since reading Wil Wheaton sing his praises and subsequently picking up The Android’s Dream last year, I’ve quickly become a big giant Scalzi fan. Reading his blog daily, as well as Old Man’s War and its sequels have gotten me back into reading sci-fi after a long stretch where I was reading mostly fantasy.

dsc_01128. Soup – Of all the things I like cooking, I think I like soups the best. Above is one of my favorites, chicken tortilla (my own recipe). Other favorites (both to cook and to eat): gumbo (either chicken or seafood), Cuban black bean, curried red lentils, and good old-fashioned chicken soup.

hw79. Spuckler Boach – One of Akiko’s sidekicks in Mark Crilley’s wonderful Akiko comics, along with Mr. Beeba, Gax and Poog. Spuckler is one of those great, totally id-driven characters, brash and overconfident, ready to leap into danger at a moment’s notice. I’m a big enough fan to use Spuckler Boach as an occasional alias online – it’s my name on Flickr, for example (and the 11th and 12th hits on a Google image search for “Spuckler Boach” are photos of Mle and EEK, who are on my Flickr contacts list).

10. Silly Walks – Not my favorite Monty Python sketch, but a classic, and I loves me some Monty Python (as any true nerd should).

And there you have it – though I left out lots of “S” things I love, like Smarties, salami, stovepipe hats, Sheldon Cooper, Sheldon comics, Snak Rock, and so much more. Anyway…
